Having your Google Business Profile suspended can feel like a digital disaster. For years your business has been prominently displayed in local search results and on Google Maps, connecting you with customers and driving foot traffic or online engagement. Then suddenly, without any warning, your GBP has been Suspended for policy violations that instantly take away a vital artery of your online business presence.
This abrupt invisibility can lead to a significant drop in inquiries, sales, and overall brand recognition, leaving business owners scrambling for solutions. Fortunately, a suspension isn’t necessarily the end of the road if handled properly. Google provides an appeals process, but successfully navigating it requires understanding the complex reasons for suspension, meticulously reviewing your profile for compliance, and then submitting a well-reasoned and evidence-backed appeal.
This post will guide you through each step, offering practical advice and strategies to help you reinstate your Google Business Profile and restore your business’ online presence. If you’re fortunate, only the first two steps will be necessary.

Step 1: Identify Policy Violations
The first step is to discover the reason why Google suspended the business profile. Often, and only if received, the original email generated by Google will only vaguely offer a general category for suspension, such as
Subject: Your business profile has been suspended
“Owner your Business Profile has been suspended due to policy violation.” But, below that line, will be the violation type: “Content that violates our policies on deceptive content and behavior isn’t allowed. Deceptive content intentionally misleads or deceives others.”
Another policy violation type might be: “Content that violates our policy on misrepresentation isn’t allowed. Misrepresentation includes misleading representations or omissions for the purpose of gaining improper benefit.”
Probably the most confusing suspension reason is when you’re told the profile is suspended due to “policy violation” and the violation type is “Content that violates our policies isn’t allowed” which is not at all helpful.
These details within the suspension notice email will help reveal a potential policy violation to troubleshoot and resolve, as it corresponds to a specific prohibited & restricted content category. Unfortunately, there are also sub-items of each category, so the exact policy violation will take time and careful inspection.
If an email was not received, you can find the cause of suspension by viewing Google’s manage appeals tool. Simply confirm the account, then select the business and look below Decision to view the suspended status and cause.
Step 2: Correct Violations and Appeal
Next, after all policy violations have been found and corrected, that same manage appeals tool will enable you to supply the necessary documents for review using Google’s guidance to fix suspended or disabled profiles.
Keep in mind that humans make mistakes, and therefore machines that have learned from humans can also make mistakes. Sometimes the stated policy violation does not translate into a clear answer. This is where experience can benefit the situation, as the professional knows to look for duplicate listing, duplicated use of the same address, and other off-profile violations.
Once you open the evidence form, you must submit evidence within 60 minutes or it won’t be attached to your appeal. You may add evidence to a linked form to help support your appeal. For any documents you submit as evidence, check that the business name and address match the profile you want to make an appeal for. Evidence that can help strengthen your appeal includes (in order of importance):
- Government-issued Business License
- Government-filed Business Registration
- Government Tax Certificate
- Government-stamped Articles of Organization
- Fictitious Firm Name (DBA) Document
- Fire Inspection Certificate, Certificate of Occupancy
- Professional Insurance
- Vehicle registration and auto insurance
- Lease agreements
- Utility bills for the business such as:
- Electricity
- Phone
- Water
- Internet
- Alarm
It is important to note that if the policy violation is not resolved, then the appeal will be denied. The appeal process, and associated wait time, restarts after each request is made.
Step 3: Appeal is Denied
Often times, the first appeal is hastily made before violations are discovered and corrected. If your request for appeal is denied, you are allowed to make a one-time Request additional review of a denied appeal. Google Business Profiles only get two appeal requests, total, so take your time to resolve policy issues.
This is your last chance for an expedited appeal, so use this opportunity to invite the help of a professional Local SEO expert such as Olin Coles to help manage your Google Business Profile. With seasoned experience personally managing over one-hundred profiles, he can optimize performance and also ensure your GBP follows all of Google’s business profile policies. Fortunately, he has also helped many others with their suspended GBP, so your appeal is more likely to be approved.
If the second and final appeal fails, then a policy violation likely still exists. At this point, the only remaining option is to request help from a Product Expert who may submit the case to Google for consideration.
Update: As of 12 January 2026, volunteer Product Experts will no longer request personally identifying information, and may only request the Profile ID (guide on where to find this) and Case ID. This information is then submitted directly to Google support personnel, who will contact the merchant directly, and may request the following information:
- Full business name
- Address (one used for verification, even if a service area business)
- Photos of signage at the business location (if not a service area business)
- Verification documents, as listed in Step 2.
We are here to help, and in most cases we can take care of this entire matter without your involvement. Olin Coles is a Silver-rated Google Product Expert for Google Business Profiles, and specializes in suspension appeals.
